What the heck is a Howler?
As previously discussed, we aren’t entirely sure how the growler got its name. The story of the howler is a little more straight-forward. A growler holds 64 ounces of beer while a howler holds 32 ounces of beer, so half the amount.
Half + Growler = Howler
Okay, that was pretty simple, but what about the term crowler? If you haven’t come across these yet at your favorite craft brewery (or were just too afraid to ask), a crowler is a large can that holds 32 ounces of beer. I think you can see where this is going…
Howler + Can = Crowler
Crowlers are pretty fun to order because they get filled at the tap just like a regular pint/growler/howler and then are closed on a special machine that applies the lid, just like how their smaller beer can cousins are. It’s like watching your own personal How It’s Made episode, but you get beer to take home in the end.
